API Applications
Animal Profiling International (API) is dedicated to the improvement of animal health management through risk-assessment technologies. Through early detection of health issues, the company's innovative products hold the promise to enhance disease prevention for a variety of large animals such as cows, horses, and pigs, as well as pets like dogs and cats. The company's initial breakthrough products are focused on the cattle industry.
Improving Yields and Financial Returns in the Cattle Industry
Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD), also know as shipping fever, costs the cattle industry approximately $1 billion annually in death losses, treatment costs, performance loss, and decreased carcass value. Despite numerous pharmaceutical treatments and cattle management strategies, studies show that beef-cattle death related to BRD in feedlots continues to increase.
Oxidative stress (OS) has gained attention as a link to injured immune systems which increases the susceptibility of animals to disease, such as BRD. OS damage to cells caused by free radicals affects the cattle industry through higher costs and losses such as death, treatments, decreased weight gain, and lowered carcass values.
Oxidative stress biomarkers can assess an animal's susceptibility to, or the presence of, BRD, aiding in the treatment of unhealthy cattle more effectively and efficiently. Studies conducted in research facilities have shown an economic benefit of animal-health profiling systems to reduce metaphylactic costs and increase profits. While the cattle industry continues to make advances in vaccine and antibiotic therapy, technologies that accurately and at an early stage assess an animal's risk of getting sick are not used readily in the industry.
Diseases such as Mad Cow Disease (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy or BSE) have raised consumers' awareness of how beef is produced, spawning detailed testing and identification systems in the cattle industry. Such identification systems enable health information about specific animals to be collected. These systems provide the ability to track the health history and current status of cattle, improving profitability and ultimately providing a safer, higher quality product to consumers. Within this market context, producers are looking to new technologies to assist them in assuring consumers their product is safe.
To increase profitability in the beef industry, API technologies help identify cattle that are at-risk for BRD, improving the efficacy of management tools to reduce sickness and increase profitability. The identification of at-risk cattle can enhance management techniques involving feed, environment, treatment, handling and purchase decisions.
To ease in the adoption of operational changes to benefit from API's animal profiling, testing has been developed with speed and efficiency in mind. API biomarker tests use a small amount of whole blood that can be easily obtained at processing speed from the tail vein. Test results are available within 48 hours to allow identified cattle to be sorted prior to or at the time of re-vaccination. Additionally, rapid (chute-side) tests are being developed to allow decisions to be made at original processing.
