Relationships are key in the cattle industry
We have several that we want to recognize for their efforts to work with us in creating awareness and controlling BVD in the cattle industry.
API is working with Superior Livestock for the second year to promote and market BVD PI negative cattle. Superior recognized the need to help producers maintain the health of their herd and market PI Free cattle. Superior's efforts paid off during 2008 when cattle sold as "
Superior PI Free" brought $1.70/cwt more than untested cattle. Their package program makes it easy to test and market PI free cattle. See Superior's website or contact Shelly Stober at 800-422-2117 ext 127 for more information.
API is entering its fourth year working with the State of Montana to identify herds that are BVD PI positive. To date, over 500 herds and 175,000 cattle have been screened and positive herds have been cleaned up. Click on the above website or contact Clint Peck at 406-896-9068 for information.
This is a new program initiated in the fall of 2008. We are pleased to be working closely with producers in our "home" state. The first 6,000 head of cattle tested will be eligible to receive $1.00/hd discount on testing, but will not exceed $250.00 per operation. This is in addition to the free test-tubes and shipping already offered to participants. Click on the above link or contact Barbi Riggs at 541-447-6228 to find out how to get signed up.
If you would like to learn more about how API can assist with your state or organization to make BVD control and testing a cost-effective reality, call us at 877-278-1344 or email Bruce Hoffman, DVM at .
BVD and control on the dairy
Testing on the dairy is a good tool to make sure BVD is not reducing pregnancy rates on your operation. One of our clients wrote an excellent article describing why he is testing and the economic benefits. His final comments "Do I think that eliminating the PI animals and significantly decreasing BVDV exposure has helped? You bet! I firmly believe it is worth the time and money." Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) Management Practices and Detection in Bulk Tank Milk in the United States
In 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) conducted the Dairy 2007 study. The study collected data on dairy health and management practices from 17 of the Nation's major dairy States. These States represented 79.5 percent of U.S. dairy operations and 82.5 percent of U.S. dairy cows. This report identifies that BVD is still an issue in the dairy industry.
U.S. BVDV Symposium... Impact on Virulence, Host Range and Control
This year's symposium on bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) hosted almost 200 cattle producers, researchers, and practicing, technical services and Extension veterinarians. The conference covered a wide range of topics including research, immunology, prevention and management of BVDV and was held ahead of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Annual Convention in Phoenix, AZ. You can see all the abstracts and presentations at
Drovers. A new websight devoted to having all the current and past info about BVD in one spot was also launched. The website
http://www.bvdinfo.org/ is a great place to visit and mark as a favorite site.
