Issue 12 - Changing times for the cattle industry... 

We have faced many changes before in the cattle industry. It's one of the reasons that I enjoy our industry... a determination to make it despite great change in the world around us. Today's times are no different. While we are definitely seeing changes relating to the new administration, struggling economy and increased input costs, there's still reason to view these changes as opportunities rather than just obstacles. And despite the struggles we may be facing with all of these issues, we can be proud we produce a superior product needed by all of us (most days I need less). What better industry to be part of in tough times?

Many producers recognize that it is in low market periods when we need to build our herds and take advantage of low prices on replacements if we have available grass and feed resources. As these animals are brought in, it's important to remember to take measures to reduce risk by buying BVD PI negative animals or testing them at home. Risk management involves testing to keep disease out, not wishing you had when your herd is devastated by it.

Another form of risk management is to optimize the marketing of your animals. Don't give a buyer an excuse to cheapen your calves. Documented vaccinations, BVD PI tested negative and source/age verification have all shown to add value over the cost of getting these practices done.
