Issue 14 - Adding Value when Selling Calves 

If your clients have not already sold their calves, you are probably wondering how you can help them get the most for them. In my discussions with our clients I have heard positive benefits about selling source and age verified calves and/or BVD PI negative calves. I recently reviewed data showing more than a $3/cwt benefit for calves that have been sold in the last 2 months under USDA Source/Age verified programs

This benefit can easily be achieved if you have kept some basic records on your calves. Date of first calf born and bull turnout documentation are examples of the routine information needed to get your farm or ranch verified through a simple phone audit. Our program includes compliant RFID tags that need to be put in the calves before they get on the truck. The cost is minimal and the return is positive.
